Luminary Bakery

Luminary Bakery Review: Social Enterprise UK

An award winning social enterprise using baking as a force for good, empowering London's most disadvantaged women to thrive.

Yes on structure and documentation, with one caveat: every impact percentage is the charity's own measurement against thresholds it set itself. The charity, its registration number and its accounts are all on the public record.

Our Assessment

What independent sources confirm

  • Luminary Limited is a registered charity, number 1181835, and a company limited by guarantee, number 11651624. The trading bakery is a separate company, Luminary Bakery Ltd, number 11450761.
  • The charity's accounts for the year ended 31 October 2025 show income of 812,291 pounds against expenditure of 702,852 pounds. They are independently examined rather than audited, which is a limited assurance engagement covering the financial statements only.
  • The charity holds a minority stake in the trading bakery, 39 percent of share capital at the 2025 year end, so the two are linked but the charity does not own the bakery outright.
  • Luminary Bakery received a Queen's Award for Enterprise in the Promoting Opportunity category in 2021, and founder Alice Williams received an OBE in the 2023 New Year Honours.
  • The Worshipful Company of Bakers, which funds Luminary through its Benevolent Fund, recorded after a 2025 visit that Luminary worked with 108 women in 2024.

What Luminary Bakery reports about itself

These are the brand’s own statements. Purpose Picks has not independently confirmed them.

  • Luminary reports that in 2025 it worked with 100 women across the four phases of its programme, that 76 percent were in employment, education, volunteering or training after the two year programme, and that 80 percent reached its independence threshold.
  • Independence is Luminary's own construct: a red, amber, green rating across work, housing, money, relationships and health, with 70 percent in each category counted as reaching independence.
  • The programme runs two years across four phases and includes a Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene for Catering qualification. Women are referred by partner organisations rather than applying directly.

What this does not tell you

  • No impact figure is externally audited or independently evaluated. The independent examiner's scope covers the accounts, not the outcome statistics.
  • The headline percentages describe the women who completed the full two years. In 2024 to 2025, 56 women enrolled in phase one, 44 completed it, 42 started phase two and 30 completed it, so those percentages cover a narrower group than the 100 women worked with.
  • There is no published follow-up on how many graduates are still in work six or twelve months after the programme ends.
  • The bakery company that provides the paid work carries net liabilities of 188,449 pounds and an accumulated deficit, so the employment side of the model still depends on external funding.
  • No pay or labour standards claim is established for either entity. Neither appears in the Living Wage Foundation's register of accredited employers.

Who it suits

Someone buying a celebration cake, a gift box or a letterbox treat who wants the purchase to sit behind a registered charity with published accounts, and Londoners who want a cafe with the same connection.
